Tulip I

Here's what I was doing while it was too humid to work on the soldier. I decided I wanted to do some more flowers, having been properly inspired by a wonderful pastel artist. My rendition of a tulip is rather sad compared to her gorgeous paintings, but I tried!

This is Prismacolors & Derwent Coloursoft colored pencils on white Pastelbord. It's 8 x 10 and it will be varnished as soon as I am confident that I do not need to do anymore on it; then it will be framed sans the glass.

This is also part of a collection I have started to bring to a gallery in November.

BTW, sorry about the copyright mark. An unfortunate necessity nowadays.

  1. Just curious - what issues have you had with humidity in regard to your work?

  2. Humidity kills paper!! Paper soaks up the water in the air like a sponge and you can't draw on it after that.

You see we have no AC in our house, and we live in Northeastern NC, surrounded by water! It gets horribly hot and humid here and I simply can't get any work done on paper unless I take it to a place that has AC, like McDonald's (which I have done many times in the past). So, working on wood and pastelbord are wonderful!!!

  3. I love the bright color combinations and the light shining off the top.
    Very nice! :)

  4. Ah, of course. For some reason I was thinking you meant it had an effect on the pencils.

I live in VA outside of DC - I believe we share the same miserable climate, hehe.

  5. Thanks Kasie!! I appreciate it! And you're the only one who noticed the light shining off the top of the petals. No one else in the art forums noticed it. I thought I hadn't done a good enough job of it, but it could use some more work. Unfortunately trying to add highlights when it's this far alone and the colors are light to begin with is, sadly, impossible. *Sigh*
